Ableton Plugin not sending audio to main mix recording

UPDATE: It’s fixed by starting all over

I have unfortunately never been able to get the Ableton plugin to work properly. I see that it records signal on the sensor tracks in Ableton, but in the video, I see that it should also send the signal to the ‘main’ group. That is not happening. As soon as I press play, I don’t hear anything, even when I unmute the main group. However, I do have signal during recording. I’ve clicked around quite a bit, but I just can’t manage to get the recording to play back. Also, exporting the recorded audio results in a file with silence.

It’s so frustrating that I keep giving up, but I can’t properly record a production like this (which I’ve finally gotten around to). Unfortunately, my time is limited, so when I see a response with a possible solution, it’s uncertain if I’ll have the time to fix it. Don’t you have any one-on-one sessions or something similar? That would save so much time.

So you were able to record? I’m having the same issue, I cannot heat the sensors in Reaper. Seems I might need to purchase Ableton, as it can “route audio into VST effects.” Any suggestions? I’m hoping the Ableton lite version will solve my issue, but your post has me uncertain.

Thanks

Hi yes I was able to record. But I bought the full Ableton license. If you send me a DM I know a smart way to do this “cheap” and legal…

Hey. Thank you so much for your reply. If Evans didn’t have commercials, I wouldn’t believe you could record with this. I’ve never experienced so much difficulty setting audio devices up and they don’t even have a proper tutorial! Anyhow, could you please send me the link, I might purchase the full ableton. Though I do have a 7x sensor template, which seems like it should work on the lite version. Thank man!

Hi @West_Brad, apologies for the late reply. In addition to the plugin guide in our user manual, we also have a plugin tutorial video that shows the step-by-step setup for the plugin inside of Ableton:

Note: In the video, we’re using Ableton Live Suite, but the same process will work if you’re using Live Lite. You will just be limited to using 8 tracks total.

I’d suggest following this video as closely as possible and if you run into trouble, please describe your issue as specifically as possible, preferably including screenshots/screen recordings of your Ableton session. You can drop those here, or if you send them to support@sunhou.se, we will likely get to it faster and make sure your issue is resolved.

For some background, we call the Sensory Percussion plugin an “Ableton plugin” because Ableton is the only DAW with which can guarantee full functionality. It’s a VST3 plugin, which means it can be loaded in other DAWs like Reaper, but we’ve found that every other DAW has inherent limitations.

For Reaper, we did work on an SP2 plugin template and found that you can get basic functionality, but Reaper’s input monitoring settings meant that the sensor audio (the sound of the actual stick hitting the rim/head) was inseparable from the output of the plugin, meaning they get recorded to the same output track(s). If you want do your own research into Reaper, here are those templates:
SP2 Reaper Templates.zip (244.6 KB)

But again, you’ll have a much easier time using the plugin in Ableton than you will in any other DAW.

Alternatively, if you have an extra audio interface/recording device handy, you can record the output of the standalone Sensory Percussion 2 app (not the plugin) by physically connecting the main or aux outputs of the EVANS Portal to the inputs of your interface.

With this method, you’re essentially recording Sensory Percussion the same way you would an SPD/guitar pedal/synth, and you can use whatever DAW you like. Here’s a diagram showing that setup:

And lastly, we are working on a built-in recording feature that we’re hoping to have ready in the next month or so. We’ll be releasing it to our Beta users first, so if you’re interested joining the Beta program, shoot us a message at support@sunhou.se.

Hope that helps!

Hi @Berno

Glad to hear you got it working! Just in case this issue pops up again, I wanted to chime in and say that based on your description, it sounds like the issue might have been the input monitoring on your sensor input tracks being set to “off” rather than “in” or “auto” (screenshot attached). When set to “off,” they will record the signal from the sensors, but that signal won’t get passed to the plugin track.

Hopefully that helps. Loved the video you posted playing the Cymatic Habitat preset btw. However you recorded that sounded great!

You guys have been really great. Your co worker Stevenz replied hours after my first post, awesome!

I was not able to get this working. I’ll em the support you provided. The tutorial and info, is for a setup that’s different than mine and sadly, my knowledge base, is not bridging the gap.
