Cross-talk from the hi-hat?

Hi All,

I have been struggling with false triggering coming from the hi-hat. Specifically, whenever playing fast. It’s not just that the hi hat is registering (my threshold is set above the normal hi-hat volume), but that there is some sympathetic resonance or something that is causing the hi-hat to be interpreted as a rim shot, and at a relatively high volume. Rarely, the same thing happens from the adjacent crash and even the rim of the closest tom.

Any fixes for this?

Thanks,

Stefan

Hi Stefan, there might be a problem with how your sensors are set up. Could you shoot an email to support@sunhou.se? We’ll be better able to help your in a support ticket. Thanks!

SOLVED

In case anyone is interested, I tried a bunch of different things to try and get rid of the cross talk, and I finally got one that seems to have eliminated the problem completely:

Step 1: I eliminated as much of the resonance as possible in the snare drum by putting a hand towel folded up underneath the drum so that the reso head would not transmit any vibrations into the shell of the drum, and on to the sensor. Putting damping inside the drum, or removing the reso head completely would probably work too.

Step 2: (most important step, I think): I added a second metal dot directly on top of the first one. Then, I was able to dial the input gain way down to about 5-10% of the bar. Because of the double magnet, I was still getting great input levels from the sensor, but any vibrations coming from the shell of the drum, or the exterior environment in general were dialed way back, including the volume of the hits that were being picked up from the hi-hat. This solved the problem about 90%, but the occasional false triggers were still bothering me….

Step 3: I folded up another hand towel and tucked it around the sensor to isolate the sensor from exterior noise a bit more. This seemed to do the trick and I do not get any more cross talk false triggers at all. It’s not ideal, but I can practice without any issues now.

Cheers!

Have you tried using the void zone under manual training to train the snare to ignore your hi hats?

Yes, I have tried that. It works for normal hits, but not for the hits that seem to get amplified by fast playing.

Hi @Stefan_G

thank you for your solution.

I face the same issues with the hyper sensitive sensors and its cables.

I have noticed cables itself are too sensitive while lying on the shells or even touching the instrument, especially on the wabbly stage where the whole instrument is shacking while playing.

Thanks,

Arek

I am thinking about wrapping my sensor cables in some sort of foam or neoprene to shield them from vibrations.

I think that the sensor training can also play a part here. I’ve noticed that some of my saved inputs create more cross talk than others.

I tried re-training and being really careful with the hits. I didn’t play too fast or too many doubles etc. Also, I only trained just past the “recommended” bar on the training screen instead of all the way to the end of the bar.

This more precise training also seems to make a significant difference with the cross talk, at least for me.
