It occurs to me that playing on a mesh pad linked to S.P. would make e.g. e-congas possible. Obviously the height of rim suitable for playing with hands could present issues for mounting the trigger. Unless one used the hand timbale half rim (can’t remember the make).

I believe people have had success with this by finding ingenious ways to attach the sensors to hand drums. However you could also try training hand percussion using a piezo trigger or clip on piezo mic of some kind in place of the sensor and plug it in to the line or mic input on the Evans Portal. You might not get the same sensitivity and accuracy as using the SP2 sensor but it will probably work. I’ve done it with things like a fixed hihat but not tried it on hand drums.
Oh and I think you mean this: MHT13BK - Meinl Percussion - The Modern Percussion Brand - Meinl Percussion
I was looking at this recently and you can actually order the hoop with the lowered rim height on one side separately, so maybe you could buy that and mount it on a standard drum shell: MEINL Percussion rim for hand-bale MHT13 - 13" chrome (RIM-47) | RIM-47
