I am getting pretty high latency with using portal and the newer cymbal and drum triggers. I am running a MacBook Pro M4 with 64GB or ram at 32 samples of buffer and the latency is still way higher that I used to get 6 years ago with SP1 and the original triggers. It seems the portal interface is incapable of low latency performance which is horrible because I have all the drum and cymbal triggers and they’re kind of useless. I may just go back to using the original triggers and no cymbal triggers because I can’t really make perform in a professional capacity with such high latency. Are there any tips for getting better results, or is there a chance of you to make a better interface or even a dedicated drum module?
I have not yet quantified the latency of my sp1 sensors versus sp2 sensors with and also without cymbals. I do sometimes think that my sp1 sensors seem to be faster and more accurate with the portal than the my sp2 sensors. Not sure if it an illusion or not. What kind of latency numbers are you consistently getting?
Maybe tweak the sensor trainings for input levels, sensitivity, and output. Maybe retrigger or voicing settings too?
I will try that. But I think it’s really the Portal interface, When I used the original sensors with a fast interface even years ago with a far less powerful computer there was almost no latency, it was very usable for a professional drummer. With the portal interface on a very powerful computer at the lowest better settings it is still quite bad. I will try tweaking the settings and get back to you guys though. Thanks!
For me even the first gen triggers are slower through portal than a fast interface like the RME interfaces. I wish we weren’t forced to use portal to be honest.
that’s so interesting. the only thing I could imagine to cause this would be clocking. perhaps the sound of your system being clocked by a more precise clock may be the effect. can the portal be clocked by the rme?
clocking was always one of those things I thought was gatekeeping myth but once you hear it AB’ed it really effects the feeling of a recording system
Unfortunately the portal interface has no clock input or output. Are ypu able to use the portal interface with very low latency?
Man, only if someone from sun house could comment to help you out … They been slacking in replying or having any presence here lately
With that said, you experience is not matching mine. Granted. I don’t know the latency fory system but I have no noticable latency and seems just as fast as my set up with edrumin. I am also running a much less powerful system. Im sure you’ll be able to figure it out; I would think you’d be getting much better results.
Hey guys,
The quickest way to get technical issues like this one resolved is to write an email to support@sunhou.se or start a chat on the website. We try to respond as quickly as possible there, often within a few business hours EST.
The Portal is low latency enough for live performance: many many professional drummers use it that way, so there is likely some kind of issue happening causing the latency to be so high. It will be difficult to troubleshoot on this thread, so the best thing to do would be to send a diagnostic report to support@sunhou.se so we can troubleshoot further.
