Hi!
Has anyone tried to use the V2 triggers with a different interface, other than the dedicated portal? Guess i could try with my focusrite but i don’t want to blow anything up. Maybe somebody already has…
For instance, my friend has a Teenage Engineering TX-6, which had some very nice tricks in its sleeve and also has like 6 stereo mini 3,5 jacks or smth as inputs and acts as an audio interface also and it got me wondering.
The V2 sensors are actually powered by the Portal, so they won’t be compatible with other interfaces. With the v1 sensors, we relied on XLR and 48-v phantom power for the sensors. This made it universally compatible with other systems, but came with a lot of downsides, too. We would not have been able to get as many inputs into the portal with XLR, so we went with the smaller cable and moving away from phantom power let us shrink the size of the sensor. The tradeoff is that you can’t really use the v2 sensors with another interface.
We have considered enabling a “pass thru” mode on the portal, that would let you use it without a computer to just pass the signal from the inputs through to the outputs on the back to use with other systems. But this is not something we’re actively working on – unless we see there’s a strong desire in the community for it.
Curious what you’d like to try to do connecting it with other interfaces?
Thanks, i guessed it still requires power to run the triggers (v2) but my initial intrest came from my sound engineer, cause with the first generation we could just plug the triggers to the stagebox and my computer with a cat cable and we had our Waves system run the whole thing, enabling my soundengineer to finetune the whole information during live also. since i got the v2 and i totally agree they are superior to the first itineration i thought maybe i could bring them into our system the same way.
I still have other options but it kept the stage clean and easier for stage technicians to understand also, because they thought they were some primitive triggers but oh, how their eyes popped when they heard whats it all about
Also gateing drum mics with the v1 triggers worked well that way and allowed for easier data tranfer from the sound desk to the light engineer. but that we worked around the other way, using dmxis…
I would love to connect to another interface!!! I would love to run a hybrid set up and the evans portal is tbh kinda trash. Micing a kit with 2 microphones is a tricky to get a 100% killer drum sound for studio- maybe passable for many live situations. While I could send my drums to another mixer, it would be really nice to have my sound go through my daw so I can run effects.
I was really hoping the the ADAT out would allow this kind of compatibility but that is kind of pointless too because who really needs 12 different outputs.
Also maybe the biggest reason to use another interface is that the outputs SUUCk so bad. I can’t even use it has a headphone output without using another preamp to gain it up. I always have to either run a headphone preamp or run the portal as the ins and then Ableton push or SPDSX Pro as my output.
I think I can help with your headphone output issue. Here’s how that low output volume issue can happen and how to fix it:
At some point the Portal was used as the system output for the computer.
The volume was turned down via the function keys at the top, while the Portal was the system audio output.
The system audio was switched back to the Macbook speakers or another device, BUT, due to the the way Mac Core Audio works, it remembers the volume setting previously saved for the Portal.
That means you can crank the output gain of the Portal via the physical knob, but it’s fighting against a low system output volume, AND, if you use the function keys to try to boost the volume, it might not work because now that is adjusting the Macbook speaker volume, and not the Portal anymore.
So the way to fix that is to reselect the Portal as the system audio output, then turn it all the way up via the function keys, and then switch the system audio back to another device (or keep it as the Portal, but realize that it’s better to use the physical knobs to adjust the volume when you are using the Portal).
Let us know if that fixes the issue for you, or you can start a chat with us on our website and we can continue to troubleshoot.
Thanks for the help! That was definitely the issue with the volume. The main other issue I was having was with the grounding situation. Moving the cables around would give false triggers.
I’m very grateful for the realization that the triggers needed phantom power. I bought a few xlr male to 1/8in trs cables and just had success in running sensory percussion though an external preamp unit into Ableton Push through ADAT. I think that the xlr is working better for grounding and I am having a lot less false triggers.
Hi @Dimension_Dealer – I see, thanks for the update. Just so you know, there is a possibility you can damage your sensors by sending phantom power to them. They are using (and expecting) much less power than 48v coming from the portal. Closer to 10v.
I’m actually surprised that an xlr-1/8 cable would transmit power. I’d expect it to just drop the power. Do the lights on the sensors turn on with those cables?
