Maybe I missed something originally and no one else had this problem, but…just in case, here goes!
So I am using an Alesis Command electronic drum set module controller to import MIDI signals for my rubber cymbal pads.
Originally, I was shown a template that basically uses a Sequencer controller with the appropriate MIDI input virtual instrument Filter. The sequencer is loaded with Trigger macros, each Velocity Assigned to the appropriate MIDI note for the unique Cymbal signal.
The problem was…this seemed to eliminate the ability for Cymbal Dynamics, because it would simply Trigger the Play button at full Velocity for the Sampler, or Sampler Group.
I noticed the Input signal on the assignments, where Threshold can be set, was definitely reacting in a dynamic manner, but once Threshold level was reached, it simply sent the On Trigger Command regardless of Signal Dynamics.
Sidenote, I was able to set a higher Threshold on a separate Trigger to simulate a Ride Cymbal Bell when hitting the same MIDI note/pad harder, since I could not apply the normal Velocity Controller effects…though it had to Trigger on top of the regular Ride Cymbal sound set at the lower normal Threshold.
I had an idea.
I created a new Velocity Assignment on the Volume Fader of the Sequencer Module with the Cymbal Triggers. I Filtered the assignment for the MIDI Virtual Instrument (all notes).
IT WORKED!!!
The Volume Fader now reacts to the Dynamics of the Input MIDI signal!
I/O Velocity windows down the chain still lack any Dynamic signal, just the default Trigger/Play signal, but you should be able to ADD the SAME ASSIGNMENT to any desired Parameter Up or Down the Chain to access the MIDI Dynamics. I have yet to experiment fully with new potential ideas, but I am excited.
At the very least, I have Cymbal Dynamics again!
Though, I will need to be aware the dynamic signal applies to all the cymbals at once as a single MIDI signal, regardless of Note. (MIDI velocities recorded to a DAW might need separated out to individual cymbals, or routed as an automation for all the cymbals together…unless I choose to route all cymbals through the DAW instead of Sensory Percussion when recording.)
