The Portrait - A Live Improvised CYOA Prototype

Hey,

I’ve been doing a masters in Practice as Research Popular Music. For a technology module, I was prototyping Sensory Percussion as a live improvised instrument to help provide the audio alongside either of the two narrative paths the audience could choose.

There’s a 360 cam footage which you can see my set up - two mesh head drums + Sensory, as well as an Akai APC key 25 to help navigate kits, and a mac m2 24gb. This footage didn’t capture the screen very well but provides an idea for how Sensory was used to improvise accompanying music. I mainly used pitch/velocity control for the samples as there were many facets to keep on top of I wanted to keep the input/ouput of Resolume relatively simple. I also used a couple of the built in kits.

Cont…The second video is the working draft in resolume before integrating Sensory. These samples in the sketch were transferred to Sensory Percussion to complete the loop. Below is the introduction of the performance. You can play/watch the small game by clicking on either the negative or positive branch in the comments section.

The Akai also controls Resolume, which controls the introduction and either of the two paths the audience can decide to take.

It was a really fun project. Theres loads I learned from the process, and Sensory Percussion ended up being the device that brought it altogether. I’d consider looking into the synergy between Sensory and Resolume, such as audio reactivity, but as the project was sat somewhere between anchored and improvised, it didn’t need too much.

Always happy to chat about it, and share processes. I even wrote a small paper on this, but it doesn’t focus too much on Sensory Percussion. More actor network theory and co-authored performances.

Thanks for reading/watching!
