Tuning tension, playing and re-triggering

Hi,

My name is Costas and here are my first questions.

I’m mostly having super fun playing drums finally in my apartment with a real kit so i haven’t been much into melody, sounds and stuff. But i’m having a bit of a trouble with the HiHat sensitivity and some re-triggering or mistriggering in the snare mostly.

So even though it’s a silent kit i’m playing very lightly since i live in an apartment building. This seems to confuse the HiHat a bit mostly in the open/close which i don’t put a lot of pressure in the pedal. I’ve tried to tweak the HiHat Range without much success. I can’t seem to find that sweet spot. Can someone assist me and explain to me what’s going on when i move the open/cross/close sliders. I don’t get the positions.

Another question is, does the tension of the mesh heads affect the triggering of the sounds? Does it need to be tight, loose or normal to get the best result? and again with what kind of hitting? I get false hits every now and then mostly in the snare. I hit the snare and in the same zone that i’m listening the snare hit i suddenly trigger a cross-stick. Some kits react better than others though. I’ve trained the drums like 3-4 times and excluded zones also.

Another issue that i have is that when i bought the mesh heads, they didn’t have an evans head for my kick and floor tom so i bought a dixon one which is nice but is a double mesh and i think that causes confusion to the sensors, only in floor - kick is fine. Can you confirm that?

Thank you

Costas

Hi Costas, welcome! Are you on the latest release 2.6.4? This release has a new hi-hat model that makes a lot of improvements.

This release also includes some new parameters for the snare that can help with cross-talk from the hi-hat. If you open the training panel on the snare, you’ll see a new “Advanced” button next to the sensitivity slider. Please give those two new parameters a try and let me know if they make any difference for you.

For head tension – a tighter head definitely works better. You will get a better response with a tight head. And you’re right about double-layer mesh heads. We haven’t tried all of them, but they can sometimes cause issue if they buzz. But for the kick, you might just need to increase the threshold and that should take care of it.

Hi Tenoch,

I’m on this release 2.6.2_5d6eec435. I’ll download the newest, play around and get back in a few days.

When you have time can you explain how the close/cross/open sliders works? I mean i get the general idea but why they only move from one side and what the line between the yellows represent? for all three parameters when you move them. (I moved it just for the question, not how i have it) I hope you understand what i’m saying.

Thank you

So after a few days these are the things i’m experiencing.

As soon as i’ve downloaded the update everything went very very smooth and i almost forgot i wasn’t playing a real kit but after a few hours i’ve noticed that i was getting a second hit, like i’ve had a delay on it, on the snare mostly after i was hitting the hi hat but not always.

I decided to re-train the drums and indeed the second hit disappeared. After a while though i’ve experienced, and still do no matter tweaking or re-training i’m doing, the following.

Hit drop offs or hit mutes meaning while i’m playing for just one hit every now and then but often enough the sound is like cutting off for just a hit, in the drums and not the cymbals. The second thing is Hi Hat washes while i’m playing it closed (i’ve been careful to keep it at exactly the same pressure) or splashes by itself while i’m steady counting on the Hi Hat.

Hi @Costas,

If you could write an email to support@sunhou.se and link to this post, I think that would be the best next step. It sounds like there may be some set up things we can troubleshoot that would be easier to figure out via email. Feel free to send a diagnostic report attached to the email which will take a recording of your sensor audio, as well as give us some information about your system that may be helpful in learning the cause of the issue/s.

With the diagnostic report, it would be helpful if you played the drum/s in the way that is causing problems. Feel free to send multiple reports if the record window is too small to capture the problem/s.

Hi @stevenz

I’ll do that and hopefully it will occur in the recording cuz it is random.

Thank you

EDIT: Tried to do it but with the 10 sec recording i can’t even sit down to the drums to play + i don’t know how anyone could tell if i hit the drums or not for the mute notes. I’ll send an email with a recording or a video maybe…

I’m experiencing similar hi hat issues. What are suggestions for my getting optimal performance using the tension settings? Also I’m thinking I should increase the tension on my hi hat pedal. Would that make a difference?

@Aka_Wayne,

The best way for us to figure out what is going on with your setup would be for your to send a diagnostic report to support@sunhou.se. Be sure to play the hi-hat in the way that is causing issues while the report is recording your sensor audio. From there we can actually use that report to recreate the exact performance and hear/see exactly what’s going on with your system.

Thanks, I’ll try that out. Is there a guide to show how to do that?

Hi there, yes, here’s the manual page on diagnostic reports:

Hi @stevenz

Sent everything as you said, thankfully it captured the issue

I wanted to follow u p on my issue in case anyone else is experiencing the same. I recorded the diagnostic and sent it to support. I received a response in only a few hours, on a saturday nonetheless! Turns out even though I was updating SP, I was running an old session with old kits. In order to update the kits you have to reload them; I just created a new session. The difference is night and day. The hi hat feels absolutely fantastic!! I’m still confused by the whole tension meter but for now everything feels amazing. I am in love with this system. I can’t wait to see where this goes.

Exactly as you said it @Aka_Wayne .

Still have some minor issues that i’m pretty sure they will be fixed.

The support is amazing!

Thank you @stevenz @tenoch
