I have encountered a weird crosstalk issue and sent a diagnostic report to Sunhouse. But I’d like to find out if someone can replicate it.
When I hit a cymbal, it creates very little crosstalk on the mesh head (let’s say a tom). I can easily threshold it out. But when I hit the cymbal very shortly after the mesh head (like a flam), it triggers the mesh head at a volume that’s too high to threshold out. Training the void zone on the mesh head with the cymbal does not help.
I’m guessing the problem only occurs because when the head is still moving from the first strike and it gets excited again by the cymbal, it then has the leftover kinetic energy from the first stike and the cymbal strike combined, which would explain the higher volume. Not that this gets me any closer to a solution though
I was having issues just like what you described and probably still am to a very small amount. My Left crash was triggering highest tom sharing a cymbal stand. I have been looking to isolate cable vibrations before trying any of the software accommodations. I now have all Toms on separate stands with ride and crash sharing a stand with good results so far.
To elaborate: I actually have all drums and all cymbals on separate stands. I even tried putting felt under each leg for one tom and one cymbal, but it made no difference.
I was having the exact same issue prior to 2.6.5. If you have not tried it already, open the training panel on the drums that are affected by the issue and click on the “advanced” button. It will open a sub-panel that has a relatively new feature for cross-talk control. I pumped it to 75% and all my cross-talk issues were solved. This works well for me even if I push the threshold really low on the drums for maximum sensitivity.
If you have already tried this, let me know because I have some other techniques that were useful before this new feature was released.
I tried 75% and still get a tom responding to some HH hits. It is less. I put a towel under the drum to see if I could stop possible vibration from the floor. It decreased a bit. I have detuned the tom a little, and that also has helped. But wow, it still does it every once and while. Goodness!
Funny, I have actually tuned the drums up a bit and it seems to have made it a little better. Otherwise I’m also around 75% and I also still get the occasional hiccup there. After some research I found the CRS Cymbald Resonance System (www.crsnorway.com) which seems like an awesome idea and I felt like trying those (with real cymbals as well as my SP-Set). I’ll let you know if that makes a difference once I have them here…

I have finally tested the CRS.
First things first: I was able to eliminate most of my crosstalk issue in software before I even got them, so they weren’t really needed but I wanted to try them anyway.
Bad news: It does not fix my crosstalk issue. I was able to turn crosstalk detection down from 80 to 70 … maybe. But that could also just be margin of error.
Good news: It does decouple the cymbals very effectively, so those short vibrations that you can hear and feel when you hit the cymbals, like a short and low metallic hum in the hardware and the floor, those are gone. I will keep them for that alone. It just doesn’t fix my crosstalk issue.
One thing I did prior to the cross-talk damper, was I doubled up the metal dot on the drum head. By doubling the magnet, I was able to reduce the input gain way down. The effect of this was that the magnet still produced good input when wanted, but the unwanted crosstalk sounds were less present.
Oh, and I believe that the internal microphone on the SP unit is integrated with the software to monitor room noise, which is also used by SP to screen out crosstalk. So, if you immediately turned off all unwanted inputs (like I did), you may want to re-enable the room mic.
Also, I wrapped a tea towel around the sensor as a last resort. This works really well, but your kit looks a little odd.
Since the update though, I don’t need these measures since the cross-talk reduction slider solved my issues.
